Why Most Kratom Extracts Are Disgusting

Kratom (mitragynine, or “MIT”) and cannabinoid extracts like CBD and CBG are lipophilic and hydrophobic. In plain English, these compounds like to mix with lipids (oils) and don’t like dissolving in water. So to make a liquid shot, the extracts have to be either oil-based (e.g. vegetable glycerin) or processed with an alcohol (e.g. isopropyl alcohol) to dissolve the plant material thoroughly enough to mix with water, corn syrup, or another flavoring agent.

Neither of those is a good option.

(i) Oils are hard to digest and difficult to flavor, since they won’t mix with sugar. The suspended extracts also tend to clump inside the oil, which drags out the process even longer while your body breaks down the lipids (fat).

(ii) Most kratom extract products use some kind of alcohol or chemical as a solvent or processing agent. That allows for thinner mixtures and faster absorption than oil โ€” but the solvent lingers with an awful taste. The faster absorption is also more of a spike and crash, and the alcohol degrades the extract over time, hurting its effectiveness and quickly taking the wind out of your sails.

Water-Soluble, with Nanotechnology and Micelles

As we mentioned up top, our CitraBerry gummies and Lime Mojito shot use water-soluble extracts from a chemical-free process. These water-soluble forms have much higher bioavailability, so you get a quick onset and a sustained release. See the chart below.

Sometimes called nanotechnology, the water-soluble process encapsulates the extract particles inside larger, ball-shaped particles called micelles. The micelles are themselves water-soluble and keep the extracts from clumping together. In essence, they package the MIT, CBD, and CBG into much smaller particles that can slip through the watery fluid and mucus layer of the small intestine to reach your bloodstream.

Okay, let’s pause. We just dropped the word “nanotechnology” in an article about kratom and cannabinoid extracts. We realize that’s a lot to take in, and yes, it probably sounds like marketing. It is marketing โ€” but check out this research posted by the National Institutes of Health on water-soluble CBD.
