Why We Chose a Chemical-Free Extraction for Kratom and Cannabinoids
In a separate post, we described the benefits of the water-soluble extracts โ mitragynine (“MIT”), CBD, and CBG โ used by Bettr Botanics. But the micellar encapsulation that makes them water-soluble happens after extraction, so what about the extraction itself?
Here, the goal is to separate the kratom alkaloids and cannabinoids from our organically sourced Mitragyna speciosa (kratom leaves) or hemp without using toxic or harsh chemicals of any kind, and without degrading the MIT or cannabinoids with extreme heat. For those reasons, we use a chemical-free extraction process built around supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2). During this process, CO2 is pressurized until it takes on the characteristics of both a liquid and a gas โ a state called supercritical โ which lets it penetrate the plant material and absorb its essential oils, including kratom’s alkaloids (full spectrum, at 60% MIT) or CBD and CBG from hemp. When the pressure is released, the CO2 simply evaporates, leaving behind a clean, pure extract with no lingering solvents to wreck the taste.
Specific Benefits of CO2 Extraction
The CO2 process has some obvious advantages over chemical solvents. Because the CO2 evaporates completely โ and is harmless to ingest in any case โ it’s considered clean and safe. Compare that to extraction methods using ethanol or butane, which can linger and taint the final product. Methods using food-safe oils don’t carry the same safety concerns as chemical solvents, but lipids have other drawbacks we discuss here.
