Kratom Extracts: Chemical-Free Extraction Improves Taste and Effectiveness

Kratom Terminology

Let’s start with a few quick terms, because a little kratom vocabulary goes a long way. Kratom is the leaf of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. The compounds tucked inside that leaf โ€” the ones doing all the good work โ€” are called alkaloids, and the star of the show is an alkaloid named mitragynine, or “MIT” for short. Our full-spectrum kratom extract keeps all 20 alkaloids and is standardized to 60% MIT, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Why Chemical-Free Extractions Taste Better

We started Bettr Botanics for a pretty simple reason: we couldn’t find a single kratom gummy we actually liked. The ones we tried tasted bad, left our tongues numb from the harsh chemical and alcohol-based solvents used to make them, and โ€” even by the handful โ€” just didn’t work very well. It didn’t seem to matter how good a brand’s other products were; nobody had cracked the code on a genuinely good gummy. So we decided to make one ourselves.

People are so accustomed to foul-tasting kratom extracts that we started assuming it’s the kratom itself that makes extracts taste bad. It isn’t. That excessively bitter, tongue-numbing flavor comes from the solvents left behind during extraction โ€” not the leaf. If you’ve tried our gummies or our shot, you already know a kratom extract can be seriously effective and taste good. We pull that off with a cleaner, chemical-free extraction process that uses supercritical carbon dioxide, then refines the result even further with chromatography. Because the carbon dioxide simply evaporates once extraction is done, there’s no leftover chemical residue or alcohol hanging around to ruin the flavor.

The Other Benefits of Chemical-Free Extraction

What we’re left with is a granulated, full-spectrum extract that carries MIT’s naturally mild, earthy bitterness โ€” a bitterness we’ve spent months of testing to soften with flavors like CitraBerry and Lime Mojito. But great taste is only half of the equation. Our extract is also more bioavailable, which is just a fancy way of saying it works better and blends more easily into formats like gummies and shots. And because we’re proud of how clean it is, we bottle our shot in clear glass so you can see the purity for yourself โ€” no brown, muddy mystery liquid hidden behind a plastic wrap or dark bottle.

How the Different Kratom Extraction Methods Work

Supercritical Fluid Extraction (this is what we use). Carbon dioxide is heated and pressurized until it reaches a “supercritical” state โ€” somewhere between a gas and a liquid โ€” where it soaks the alkaloids right out of the plant material. Now, the carbon dioxide technically acts as a solvent here, but it’s nothing like the harsh chemical solvents in other methods: it’s a natural gas that evaporates completely and leaves zero residue behind. That’s exactly why we call our process chemical-free.

Maceration, Infusion, Percolation & Decoction. These are all slight variations on the same old-school idea. You soak dried, ground, finely powdered leaves in a liquid solvent, then strain and separate the spent plant material from the solvent. The solvents are usually water, ethanol, or ethyl acetate โ€” though some outdated methods reached for harsher stuff like methanol or chloroform.

Microwave-Assisted Extraction. Think of this as maceration’s high-tech cousin. It works much the same way but uses microwave energy to heat the solvent, which helps the solvent penetrate the plant faster and means you can get away with using less of it.

Solventless Extraction. True solventless extraction skips chemical solvents entirely and relies on physical forces โ€” ice water, agitation, heat, and pressure โ€” to mechanically separate the plant’s oils. It’s a different approach from ours, but it’s worth knowing about when you’re comparing your options.
