CO2 Cannabinoid Extraction: Clean, Safe and Effective

In a separate posting we described the benefits of the water-soluble cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, CBN, etc.) we exclusively use in all Bettr Botanics products. But the micellar encapsulation process for water-solubility is performed after extraction, so what about the actual extraction process?

Here, the goal is to get the cannabinoids separated from our organically sourced hemp without using toxic or harsh chemicals of any kind and without using high temperatures that will cause the cannabinoids and terpenes to degrade. For those reasons, we use a supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction process. During this process, CO2 is pressurized until it has characteristics of both a liquid and gas (a state referred to as supercritical), allowing it to penetrate plant material and absorb its essential oils. When the pressure is released, the CO2 simply evaporates to leave behind a clean and pure extract.

The CO2 process has some obvious advantages vs. the use of chemical solvents. Because the CO2 evaporates and in any case is completely harmless to ingest, it’s considered clean and safe. Compare this to extraction methods using ethanol or butane solvents, which can taint the final product. Other methods using food safe oils don’t have the same safety concerns as chemical solvents, but their extracts are less effective because the lipids slow and limit absorption.

When selecting an extraction process for the cannabinoids (CBD, CBG and CBN) in our products, CO2 extraction became the obvious choice. It’s clean, safe, effective, and more socially responsible than using chemical solvents like butane and ethanol.

From our organically sourced hemp to our CO2 extraction and water-soluble preparation, we have done our best to provide the safest, most effective cannabinoid extracts available anywhere.
